The lyrics are delivered with an acerbic tone, referencing on-the-road observations such as a failing pilot light, insecurities about his facial hair, and paranoia of his teeth falling out. The song is driven by a propulsive drumbass beat with eerily plucked guitars that enforce the songs dark and paranoid mood. Reviews of the Why? - The Hollows (12):
Conjukus
I disagree with all of you. I feel it is continued brilliance of BOC.
Prince Persie
My copy is also ruined by the sleeve, AND was purchased for the BOC mix only, AND is disappointing also! Weird. I had hoped that they would vet their collaborations to be only with artists who shared their affinity for an immersive and cinematic musical experience, but alas - the indie rap definitely juxtaposes BOC's usual sensibilities. I suspect it is projects like this and not live shows that funds their art, ultimately, and I consider this track a significant piece of evidence that they're men and not gods, which I consider half disappointing and half a relief. This gunk probably won't wash off and if it did, it wouldn't do so enough to fix juxtaposition issues. :(
Negal
To my ears its a great track and instantly recognisable as BOC. How did you get on with cleaning it. Just got copy myself and it similarly fucked
Linn
My copy is incredibly noisy, probably because it has spent 8 years in PVC sleeve. Anyone has the same issue?
JOGETIME
Same issue here, any of you come up with a solution?
Irostamore
My copy has developed the same issues over the years. Culprit seems to be the outer PVC sleeve the original record came in with, which chemically interacts with the record over time and damages it unrecoverably. As this seems to be a common problem, there are various threads in forums; as of Sept 2016 you can check here:http://recordcollectormag.com/letters/ruined-vinyl-the-sequelshttps://www.reddit.com/r/vinyl/comments/340xeg/outgassing_or_how_pvc_sleeves_ruin_records/pictures: http://imgur.com/a/TEpBw

I have an idea that the record was pressed onto some kind of plastic instead of colored vinyl. The record texture and overall 'feel' (sorry) is different to other 12"s I own, plus there are no run-out etchings - it's something I have never encountered before.
Kulafyn
Yeah, mine too. It should be unplayed/mint as far as I know and the surface is full of weird smudges, sort of like a thin film covering most of the record. Anyone with a household item approach to cleaning it?

A Persian philosopher named Jalal al-Din Muhammad Rumi once wrote, "Out beyond ideas of wrongdoing and rightdoing, there is a field. I will meet you there."So, if you came to this track - as I did - for the Boards Of Canada remix... And find yourself disappointed with their effort - for whatever your reason - then perhaps you should ask yourself this..."Have I - in my 'infinite' wisdom - projected something onto an artist... An artist, who's freedom of expression has, at some point in time, yielded some of the most mind blowing electronica tracks that I've ever heard... And, having listened to most of their works, then recognised a discernible pattern to how they make their music... And, thus, now find myself in a position to 'perfectly' understand and state exactly what it is that they should be doing (and shouldn't be doing) with their music for 'me', 'myself' and 'I' to like them... Then perhaps... In projecting my own opinion about what these artists should and shouldn't be doing, maybe I have gone and put them into a small little box of my own making, expecting them to stay there like two good little well trained poodles ought... ?"Well... Perhaps then... Yes... Perhaps then... If you can honestly ask yourself that... Then you may really see 'something' that lies beyond the horizon of everyday subjective perspective... 'Something' that is beyond the notions of "right and wrong"... That leaves opinionated trains of thought to one side and accepts whatever 'is' without prejudice AND opinion as to what it should be... And, in doing your best to listen with this open mind, maybe then, rather than complaining when someone does something that you weren't expecting... OR does something that you simply don't like... Which seems to only leave you disappointed - or even hurt - because it doesn't match (at least only from your own single minded perspective) what you thought it was going to be like... You'll at last hear 'something' that lies beyond your own desire... And see 'something' that freely expresses what it is that someone else wanted to express when they decided to create it... !As they say... "If I'm sinking in laughing at something sunken in, I am..." Surprised you didn't like this BoC remix at first... it's always been one of my favorite tracks of theirs. Glad to hear you ended up liking it in the end.
Ballagar
I've always liked this 12" and its anticon companion, thanks for the wonderful review..

The reason why I sought out this EP was the Boards of Canada remix, but it has left me rather disappointed. The mix does not really contain that wonderful trademark BOC sound, to my ears this is just a run of the mill indie track with an annoying rap vocal. I had hoped the Dead Dogs Two remix was just a failed experiment, but here we go again. I really do not hope they will pursue this direction any further.
