The Songs of Distant Earth is the sixteenth studio album by English musician, songwriter and producer Mike Oldfield, released on 21 November 1994 by WEA. It is a concept album based on the 1986 science fiction novel The Songs of Distant Earth by Arthur C. In 1993, Oldfield completed his 19921993 tour to promote his previous album, Tubular Bells II 1992, his first concert tour since 1984. The album was his first of the initial three that he was contracted to produce for Warner Music UK. Songs in album Mike Oldfield - The Songs Of Distant Earth 1994. Mike Oldfield - In The Beginning. The Songs of Distant Earth blend together two motifs crafted through Mike Oldfield's atmospheric music. Both outer space and inner space under water are the themes of this album, but Oldfield's synthesized artistry comes up short during the course of the 17 tracks, mainly because of the intermittent talking and unnecessary vocabulary that quickly becomes irksome and ineffective. About the music, it is usually Mike Oldfield's differentiation of rhythms or styles on a song to song basis that makes his music thought-provoking and fresh. On this al. Reviews of the Mike Oldfield - The Songs Of Distant Earth (2):
I had listen to this release about 1000 times in the past 20 years...
I think this is far the best album that Mike Oldfield has ever released.
If I had to chose 1 single work of music from the entire catalogue of humankind's music, this would be the record to bring to a deserted Island.
An amazing masterpiece, from a wonderful musician.
