Reviews of the Isao Suzuki Trio / Quartet / Tsuyoshi Yamamoto Trio - The Three Blind Mice 45 Box (9):

This is an extraordinary set as you might imagine.Seeing Kevins initials on any project makes me want to hear it, this especially, given the material being reissued. To be brief, this is likely the best way to hear these albums on vinyl. Given the lack of information regarding the product, skepticism is warranted. Luckily, I have my own Japanese Originals and did some comparisons for Midnight Sugar. Its the more popular and well recorded of the three as I can tell, so what better pick against my first press TBM-23 is there?Just off of memory its easy to tell them apart as the differences mainly lie in the staging of instruments. Drums especially are whats brought out and into the listening space as well as a bigger bass presence. The Japanese pressing, as they usually do regardless of title or genre since its how they mastered at the time, have more depth to it all.You can easily describe the two as engaging vs laid back. This doesnt necessarily mean one is objectively better, they both have the same qualities just in different display. The Japanese is what I would put on for a more lounge like mood while the KG 45 is for an intent listener. One could also call the 45 flat compared to the Original, as Im sure some purists would say, since the instruments are more equally balanced in loudness. This is generally how the albums compare with each other and Im happy to have both. The only minor complaint I would have is that while I enjoy the more present drums they do bring a slight harshness to them and shimmer constantly for some songs on Midnight Sugar. Something inbetween the Japanese and KG 45 would have been preferable in this case, but its only on a few tracks as mentioned. Now, being curious as to what source what used for this I went to do a little investigating. Kevin Gray answered me saying he doesnt recall the project very well and probably could not disclose it either case.Ive ran the grooves through Audacity and checked them myself after some normalization and they look equally dynamic to me, indicating no safety copy was sent to Coherent Audio. The two possibilities I see are that they actually did send the master tapes or Japan simply provided some digital transfers of the tapes. Considering companies unwillingness to license tapes these days I actually believe the latter to be more likely. The lack of advertisement for this set being All Analog is also a red flag. With this in mind you should consider your options, but know that the sound is fantastic regardless. One thing that is not however, is the covers themselves. Thin cart stock sleeves holding 2 discs and with poor scans depicting the cover images. This is not as premium as the rest of the set.Equipment Used:Technics SL-1210GR TurntableParatrace tipped Nagaoka MP-200 CartridgeCyrus 2 AmplifierSystem Fidelity SF-3050 Tower Speakers

Is anyone else getting right channel distortion on the drums of track F1 and H1?

Sonics are incredible, fantastic reissue. The packaging sucks though, did they not have the rights the original artwork? Appears they just scanned an old LP.

I contacted Impex and the had no clue: " I have no explanation on why your copy had two different catalog numbers expect it was a printing error ... I wish I have an extra box I can send you for replacement however the set is limited edition and I no longer have stock"
Ndlaitha
Outstanding vinyl quality. I recognized something interesting. On back in the cover in the small printing it is stated 6023-45 and at the white border it stated 6022-45. Can anyone verify this?
Marg
Vinyl's quality is all right, but the packaging and printing is very rough, not as good as the original version
